A 21-year-old woman was also arrested for allegedly helping him flee. Authorities confirmed the shooting left three people injured. The mall has since reopened with heightened security.

Gang Motive Suspected in Westfield Valley Fair Shooting

According to the San Jose Police Department, the violence appears gang-related. Chief Paul Joseph stated a conflict arose between two groups inside the mall. He said the teen suspect likely mistook one victim for a rival gang member.

Preliminary evidence suggests the groups wore gang-affiliated clothing. The suspect was on probation for a prior firearms offense. Chief Joseph criticized the state’s juvenile justice system in remarks to the Los Angeles Times.

He argued lenient consequences embolden young offenders. The chief expressed frustration over recurring gun violence in public spaces. This case has ignited a local debate on youth crime and prevention.

Victims Recover as Community Reels from Attack

The shooting caused panic among hundreds of holiday shoppers. It occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the mall’s upper level near Macy’s.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots. People dove for cover behind retail racks and in storage rooms. Police said a verbal argument quickly escalated before the gunfire.

The three victims included an adult man, an adult woman, and a 16-year-old girl. All sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Reports indicate the woman and teen girl were struck by stray bullets.

Each victim has been treated and released from the hospital. The swift arrest has brought some relief to the shaken community. Mayor Matt Mahan called the event a wake-up call for Silicon Valley.

The arrest in the Westfield Valley Fair shooting closes a tense chapter for San Jose shoppers. The case now moves to the courts, where questions about juvenile justice will take center stage.
