Special Correspondent, Dhaka: Significant progress has been made in the investigation of the high-profile businessman abduction case that occurred in Nikunja, one of the capital’s upscale residential areas. In connection with the brazen abduction from a busy road in Nikunja-2, a Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for seven arrested suspects, including the area’s notorious criminal known as “Gunda Jasim.”

On Tuesday (December 17), Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Fazle Rabbi, the investigating officer of Khilkhet Police Station, produced the arrested suspects before the concerned court in Dhaka and sought a seven-day remand. After the hearing, the court allowed a three-day remand for each of the accused in the interest of a proper investigation.
Regarding the remand, the investigating officer said that the written copy of the court order has not yet been received. Once the order is in hand, the accused will be brought to Khilkhet Police Station and interrogated thoroughly in phases. He added that investigators expect to uncover crucial information regarding the core plan behind the abduction, financial transactions, the associate network, patronage, vehicles used, and any future criminal plots during the remand period.
According to police sources, on Monday evening businessman Ziaul Mahmud was forcibly abducted from in front of Spicy Hotel in Nikunja-2 while he was standing on the public road. Eyewitnesses said the entire incident took place within seconds, as he was dragged into a black Hiace vehicle. The sudden abduction spread panic throughout the area and raised serious concerns about public safety.
Local sources and preliminary police investigations indicate that “Gunda Jasim,” who has long exerted influence in Nikunja through criminal activities, led the abduction. Police believe the primary motive behind the crime was to instill fear, assert dominance in the area, and send a message of territorial control.
Immediately after the incident, Khilkhet police intensified technological surveillance. By analyzing CCTV footage, mobile call data, and vehicle movement, police traced the abductors’ vehicle. Subsequently, a raid was conducted in the Sripur area of Ashulia, where the abducted businessman Ziaul Mahmud was rescued unharmed.
During the operation, police arrested Jasim alias “Gunda Jasim,” Md. Faruk Hossain, Mahbub Munshi, Anik, Md. Alamgir Hossain, Mahadi Sarkar Rakib, and Shilpi Akter alias Rani. Police said several other members of the gang, including Raja Mia and Tarek Aziz, are still on the run, and continuous operations are underway to arrest them.
In this connection, an abduction case has been filed with Khilkhet Police Station (Case No. 09, dated 09/12/2025) under Sections 365/34 of the Penal Code. The case is currently under investigation.
The arrest of the prime accused, including “Gunda Jasim,” and the granting of remand have brought a sense of relief among residents of the Nikunja area. Locals said that effective and visible action has finally been taken against the reign of terror and intimidation that had persisted for a long time.
Police have reiterated that no criminal, regardless of influence, is above the law. Authorities expressed hope that through a fair investigation and exemplary punishment of the offenders, law and order in the Nikunja area will be restored and stabilized.
