The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Sullivan County, New York, effective Wednesday night, with residents urged to brace for wind gusts as strong as 60 mph. The alert, released at 8:58 p.m., remains in effect until 9:45 p.m.

According to the weather service, the storm was moving rapidly east at 70 mph, threatening several communities including Fallsburg, Monticello, Liberty, Bethel, and Neversink. Officials warn that the strong winds could cause damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines.

Thunderstorm Details and Areas Impacted

The National Weather Service reported that the line of severe storms stretched from Hankins to Honesdale to Moscow at the time of the alert. Residents in affected areas are advised to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building for protection.

Communities under threat include Fallsburg, Monticello, Lackawaxen, Blooming Grove, Honesdale, Liberty, Bethel, Paupack, Damascus, and Neversink. Officials emphasize the need for vigilance, noting that fast-moving storms like these can develop quickly and cause widespread damage within minutes.

Governor Kathy Hochul earlier cautioned residents across New York about the potential for damaging winds and flash flooding, prompting bridge restrictions in parts of the state. Emergency management officials are on standby to respond to downed trees and power outages as the system moves through the region.

Lightning and Rain Safety Tips

Lightning strikes the United States about 25 million times each year, causing roughly 20 deaths annually, according to the weather service. During severe thunderstorms, residents should take precautions both indoors and outdoors to reduce risk.

Experts recommend having a lightning safety plan before venturing outdoors, watching the sky for thunderclouds, and seeking shelter immediately when thunder is heard. Indoors, avoid corded phones, electrical devices, and plumbing fixtures to prevent electric shock.

After the last rumble of thunder, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activity. If caught outside without shelter, avoid open fields, ridgelines, and isolated trees. Instead, find low-lying areas and stay away from water and metal objects that can conduct electricity.

Driving and Road Safety During Heavy Rain

Heavy rainfall often accompanies severe thunderstorms, increasing the risk of flash floods and dangerous driving conditions. Motorists are urged to slow down, use headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles to avoid skidding or hydroplaning.

The weather service advises drivers to stay in middle lanes where water tends to drain faster and to avoid braking suddenly on slick roads. Large vehicles like trucks and buses can create spray that reduces visibility, so keeping a safe distance is essential.

If rain becomes too heavy to see clearly, pull over safely, turn on hazard lights, and wait for conditions to improve. Never park or walk near drainage ditches or culverts during storms, as water levels can rise suddenly and carry vehicles or pedestrians away.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather channels and avoid unnecessary travel until the warning expires.
