A surfer has died after a shark attack at Long Reef Beach in Sydney. The attack happened on Saturday morning as the man was surfing with friends. Police confirmed the victim suffered severe injuries and died at the scene. This is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney in more than three years.

Beaches across northern Sydney have now been closed. Lifeguards on jetskis are patrolling the waters. Officials say they are still working to identify the species of shark involved.

Shark Attack Sydney Leaves Surfer Dead

The incident happened just after 10 a.m. local time. The man was about 100 meters from shore when the shark struck. Friends and nearby surfers pulled him to the beach. Police said he had lost too much blood and could not be saved.

Police Superintendent John Duncan told reporters the man had suffered “catastrophic injuries.” He described him as an experienced surfer with a wife and young daughter. Two pieces of his surfboard were later recovered from the water.

According to Reuters, this marks Sydney’s first shark death since February 2022. That case was the first fatal attack in the city since 1963. Data from Taronga Zoo shows there have been three other fatal shark attacks in Australia in 2025. One surfer was killed in March in Western Australia.

    Safety Measures and Wider Impact

The Northern Beaches Council confirmed several beaches were shut down after the attack. Warnings have been posted along the coastline. Lifeguards are scanning the waters for shark activity.

Authorities are reminding beachgoers to remain alert and follow safety guidelines. Swimmers and surfers are urged to stay close to shore and avoid early morning or dusk when sharks are most active.

The tragedy has shaken the local community. Long Reef is a popular spot for both surfers and families. Locals said the victim was well known and respected in the area.

    Shark Attacks in Australia

Australia has one of the highest numbers of shark encounters in the world. Most are not fatal, but serious cases still occur. Experts note that sharks often confuse surfers for prey. Boards can look like seals from below the surface.

Shark nets and drone patrols are used in many areas. However, no system offers total protection. Marine authorities continue to stress that risk can never be fully removed.

The shark attack in Sydney highlights the ongoing danger of Australia’s coastline. Surfers and swimmers are asked to remain cautious. Shark safety remains a top concern for authorities and the public.
