Microsoft has announced that it will shut down the once popular communication platform Skype. Skype will no longer be available from May 5, 2025. As part of its new plan, the company wants to bring Microsoft Teams to the forefront as the main communication platform.
In a blog post, Microsoft said, “To provide users with a more modern and efficient communication experience, Skype will be discontinued and Teams will be given full priority.” Skype users will be migrated to Teams in stages over the next three months. Microsoft said that even if Skype is discontinued, users will continue to receive all their previous benefits through Teams.
To ease the transition process, existing Skype users will be able to log in to Microsoft Teams for free with their account information. It will continue to provide personal and group calls, messaging, file sharing, and other benefits as before.
Microsoft says, “All your previous Skype chats and contacts will automatically transfer when you log in to Teams. As a result, users will be able to continue communicating as before.” Before Skype is shut down, users will be given two options.
First, if you log in to Teams using your current Skype account information, your previous chats and contacts will automatically transfer. As a result, users will be able to continue their communication just as before. Second, those who do not want to go to Teams can download and save all their Skype message, contact and call history information.
In addition, Skype and Teams can be used simultaneously until May 5. If users want, they can download the Teams app and log in with their Skype account, and all previous chats and contacts will automatically be available.
Microsoft is discontinuing Skype credit and calling subscription services for new users. However, those who are already using these services will have the opportunity to use these services until the start of the next term. In addition, after May 5, Skype’s paid users will be able to use the ‘Skype Dial Pad’ through the Skype web portal or Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft says that even though Skype is discontinued, Teams will provide users with a more modern and improved communication experience. Teams’ versatile features will be more effective than Skype. Millions of people around the world have been using Skype for two decades, but in the past few years, Skype has fallen behind rival platforms.
