Stanford University has launched a major new initiative. The Stanford Accelerator for Learning Create+AI Challenge is now open. Applications are due by January 12, 2026. It calls for ideas that use AI to transform learning and teaching. The goal is to put human potential at the very center.Backed by support from Google.org, the challenge seeks a fundamental shift. Instead of just automating tasks, it asks how AI can truly augment human ability. This approach prioritizes expanding access and fostering genuine connection in education.

Focus on Augmenting Human Roles in Learning

The challenge is structured around three core tracks. Each focuses on a different aspect of the educational experience. The “Augment Teaching” track looks for tools that ease teacher workloads. This frees educators to focus more on building critical relationships with students. The “Augment Learning” track targets tools for student participation. It especially seeks solutions that support learners with disabilities. The final track, “Augment Career Opportunities,” aims to use AI for skill-building and mentorship. The goal is to create clearer pathways to meaningful work.

Significant Funding and Support for Winners

The total prize pool is substantial at $400,000. Two winners in each of the three tracks will receive $50,000 awards. Several other projects will earn smaller grants between $10,000 and $20,000. According to official Stanford materials, funding is just one benefit.Winning teams will also receive expert mentorship from Stanford faculty. They will gain visibility at the prestigious AI+Education Summit in February 2026. Selected projects may be invited for further development in a summer cohort at Stanford. This comprehensive support is designed to turn strong ideas into real-world solutions.Teams must include at least one member with a Stanford affiliation. This includes current students, staff, alumni, or scholars. Collaboration with outside educators, researchers, and technologists is strongly encouraged. The review panel will judge proposals on innovation, learning impact, and a strong commitment to fairness.
