Thailand is launching emergency helicopter evacuations for critically ill patients. The mission targets a major hospital in the flooded south. The death toll has now reached 33 people. Widespread flooding has affected millions across nine provinces.

Thailand flood crisis

The severe weather has also impacted neighboring Malaysia. Both nations have evacuated tens of thousands of residents. According to Reuters, this is the second consecutive year of major floods in the region.

Thailand Flood Crisis: A Critical Hospital Evacuation

Helicopters are being deployed to Hat Yai city. They will deliver food and evacuate patients from Hat Yai Hospital. The hospital’s first floor is completely underwater. It was treating 600 patients, with 50 in intensive care.

A public health official confirmed the urgent operation. “Today, all intensive care patients will be transported out,” he told Reuters. About 20 helicopters and 200 boats are part of the rescue. Government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said reaching stranded people has been difficult.

The Thai military has taken charge of relief efforts. Convoys are moving boats and medical supplies toward the hardest-hit areas. The nation’s sole aircraft carrier has also been dispatched to provide air support and assistance.

Regional Impact and Ongoing Weather Threats

The flooding’s impact is immense. The Thai Interior Ministry reports over 2.7 million people affected. More than 980,000 homes have been damaged by the rising waters. The city of Hat Yai recently experienced its heaviest rainfall in 300 years.

Weather officials forecast more scattered thundershowers. Several southern provinces, including Songkhla, are under threat. The persistent rain is hampering rescue and recovery operations across the region.

The crisis extends beyond Thailand. In Malaysia, flooding has also led to evacuations and one reported death. Indonesia is dealing with separate floods and landslides this week, with several casualties estimated.

The Thailand flood crisis has triggered a massive, multi-pronged emergency response. With weather forecasts predicting more rain, the full scale of the disaster is still unfolding. Rescue teams are in a race against time to reach everyone stranded by the devastating waters.
