Trump Cuts 500 Jobs at Voice of America Amid Legal Battle

The US Agency for Global Media is cutting more than 500 jobs. This move impacts Voice of America and other government-funded broadcasters. Acting CEO Kari Lake announced the layoffs late Friday. The decision intensifies an ongoing legal conflict over the news outlets.

A federal judge recently blocked efforts to remove VOA’s director. The administration is now proceeding with significant staff reductions. This creates immediate uncertainty for hundreds of employees.

Major Staffing Cuts at US Global Media Agency

Kari Lake leads the US Agency for Global Media. She confirmed a reduction in force, or RIF, is underway. This action eliminates 532 full-time government employee positions. Lake stated the agency will continue its mission after these cuts.

She even suggested the agency might function better. Lake posted her announcement on social media. She promised more steps to improve the “broken agency.”

According to Reuters, layoff notices were initially sent in June. Over 600 employees received those notices. This latest action formalizes a large portion of those job losses.

Ongoing Court Challenge Complicates Layoffs

The job cuts follow a significant legal setback for the administration. US District Judge Royce Lamberth blocked the removal of VOA Director Michael Abramowitz. The judge ruled the action was “plainly contrary to law.”

Judge Lamberth was nominated by President Ronald Reagan. His ruling requires the administration to show compliance with his orders. He gave them “one final opportunity” to avoid a contempt trial.

A group of agency employees is suing to block VOA’s elimination. They called Lake’s continued attacks on the agency “abhorrent.” They look forward to her deposition next month.

The administration detailed its plans in a recent court filing. It intended to send RIF notices to 486 VOA employees. Another 46 employees from other agency branches would also be cut.

The future of US international broadcasting faces a pivotal moment. These deep cuts to Voice of America staff challenge its global reach. The legal and political fight over its mission is far from over.
