Understanding the Science of Film Fog

X-ray and CT scanners emit ionizing radiation. This radiation interacts with the light-sensitive emulsion on film. It can create a hazy effect known as “fog.”

Fog reduces image contrast, color accuracy, and sharpness. The damage is cumulative with each scan. Higher ISO film, like 800 and above, is most vulnerable.

According to Reuters, major airports are rapidly adopting CT technology. These scanners use a more intense X-ray beam. They can fog film in a single pass, unlike older machines.

Practical Steps to Protect Your Film

You should never pack unprocessed film in checked luggage. Those scanners are far more powerful. They will almost certainly ruin any film inside.

Always carry film in your carry-on bag. The TSA officially allows hand inspection requests for film. Politely ask an agent for a manual check to avoid the machine entirely.

You can also use lead-lined bags for extra protection. These bags are designed to shield film from low-level radiation. Be aware that TSA may still ask to open the bag for a swab test.

Traveling with film requires planning. Protecting your images from TSA scanners is entirely possible. Always communicate clearly with security personnel to ensure a smooth process.
