TSA Scanners Pose Risk to Camera Film, Experts Warn

Airport security scanners pose a hidden threat to unprocessed camera film. The radiation from these machines can cause irreversible damage. Traveling photographers must take precautions to protect their work.

TSA X-Ray Scanners Damage Camera Film

This issue is becoming more critical as airports upgrade their equipment. Newer, more powerful CT scanners are being installed nationwide. The Transportation Security Administration confirms these changes are ongoing.

Understanding the Science of Film Fog

X-ray and CT scanners emit ionizing radiation. This radiation interacts with the light-sensitive emulsion on film. It can create a hazy effect known as “fog.”

Fog reduces image contrast, color accuracy, and sharpness. The damage is cumulative with each scan. Higher ISO film, like 800 and above, is most vulnerable.

According to Reuters, major airports are rapidly adopting CT technology. These scanners use a more intense X-ray beam. They can fog film in a single pass, unlike older machines.

Practical Steps to Protect Your Film

You should never pack unprocessed film in checked luggage. Those scanners are far more powerful. They will almost certainly ruin any film inside.

Always carry film in your carry-on bag. The TSA officially allows hand inspection requests for film. Politely ask an agent for a manual check to avoid the machine entirely.

You can also use lead-lined bags for extra protection. These bags are designed to shield film from low-level radiation. Be aware that TSA may still ask to open the bag for a swab test.

Traveling with film requires planning. Protecting your images from TSA scanners is entirely possible. Always communicate clearly with security personnel to ensure a smooth process.

Info at your fingertips

What exactly is film fog?

Film fog is a hazy discoloration on developed photos. It is caused by unintended exposure to radiation or light. This reduces the overall quality and clarity of the image.

Will one scan always ruin my film?

Lower ISO film can often survive a single pass through older X-ray machines. Newer CT scanners are much more powerful. They present a significant risk even from one scan.

How do I request a hand inspection?

Politely inform the TSA officer you have unprocessed camera film. Request a hand inspection for your carry-on bag. They will visually inspect and swab the film for explosives.

Are digital camera sensors affected too?

No, digital camera sensors are not sensitive to X-ray radiation. This issue only affects traditional, unprocessed photographic film. Memory cards and digital gear are safe.

What about instant film like Polaroids?

Instant film is also susceptible to X-ray damage. You should treat it the same as any other unprocessed film. Request a hand inspection for instant film packs as well.
