Uganda’s communications authority has ordered all service providers to suspend internet access ahead of Thursday’s general election, triggering a nationwide uganda internet shutdown. The decision, announced by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), is set to take effect from 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday, with no timeline given for restoration.

UCC Orders Internet Suspension
The UCC said the uganda internet shutdown was necessary on public safety grounds, citing the need to prevent “online misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud, and the incitement of violence.” In a letter to mobile operators, the regulator said it was acting on a strong recommendation from security agencies, including the army and police.
Contradiction With Earlier Assurances
Earlier this month, the UCC had dismissed reports of a possible uganda internet shutdown as rumours, stating that its role was to guarantee uninterrupted connectivity nationwide. The latest directive marks a clear shift from that earlier position.
Impact on Connectivity and Services
Users of regular mobile data have already reported losing internet access under the uganda internet shutdown, while some business facilities, such as large hotels, continue to have wireless connectivity. Voice calls and basic SMS services are expected to remain operational during the suspension.
Election Context and Political Reaction
The uganda internet shutdown comes as President Yoweri Museveni, 81, seeks a seventh term in a rematch of the 2021 election against opposition leader Bobi Wine, 43, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi. There are six other candidates. Bobi Wine shared the UCC’s letter on X, urged supporters to use a Bluetooth-based communication app, and described those behind the shutdown as “cowards.” The UCC later warned it could restrict the app’s operation.
The uganda internet shutdown has been imposed ahead of a tightly contested election, with authorities citing security concerns and opposition figures condemning the move. As voting approaches, the suspension raises concerns over access to information and digital communication, echoing similar measures taken during the 2021 polls.
