The U.S. Institute of Peace headquarters has a new name. It is now called the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The change happened in Washington, D.C., on December 3, 2025.

USIP renamed for Trump

This renaming follows a turbulent year for the institute. It also coincides with White House-backed peace talks in Africa. The move is seen as an effort to bolster a diplomatic legacy.

A Controversial Gesture for a Peace Legacy

Signage on the famous Peace Building now bears Trump’s name. According to The Washington Post, the new title is displayed in several locations. The report states this was a planned action to frame Trump as a global peacemaker.

The institute itself was created by Congress in 1984. Its mission is to mediate international conflicts. The nonpartisan organization has worked globally for decades.

Earlier in 2025, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) moved to dismantle it. DOGE agents forcibly entered the building and fired staff. A federal judge later ruled that takeover unlawful in May.

Legal Challenges and Reputation at Stake

The court’s decision restored control to the original USIP board. It declared the DOGE’s actions null and void. Despite this legal win, the institute faced more staff dismissals afterward.

This context makes the renaming particularly significant. An Axios report notes it highlights a controversial year for the agency. The change is a public relations move tied to Trump’s agenda.

International partners are reportedly concerned. They fear the politicization harms USIP’s neutral reputation. Trust built over years with foreign governments could erode.

The renaming of the USIP building marks a bold political statement. It seeks to cement a specific legacy amidst legal and institutional turmoil. The long-term impact on global peacebuilding efforts remains unclear.

What is the U.S. Institute of Peace?

The USIP is a nonpartisan, federally created institute. It was established by Congress in 1984 to prevent and resolve international conflicts. Its work involves mediation, diplomacy, and peacebuilding education.

Why was the USIP renamed?

The renaming is widely viewed as a gesture to bolster Donald Trump’s image as a peacemaker. It comes as his administration promotes brokered deals abroad, like the Rwanda-DRC talks. According to The Washington Post, the move had been planned for some time.

Was the DOGE takeover legal?

No, a federal judge ruled it unlawful. The May 2025 court decision stated the DOGE’s seizure of the building and firing of staff was “null and void.” Control was officially returned to the institute’s original board.

How does this affect the institute’s work?

Former staff and partners worry about damaged credibility. A neutral reputation is crucial for mediating between conflict parties. The political renaming may make foreign governments hesitant to engage.

What is the DOGE?

The Department of Government Efficiency is a federal agency. It was tasked with a government efficiency review. Its attempted takeover of USIP was part of a broader, controversial executive order.
