VIDEO: Trump’s Praise for Modi During Egypt Summit and Remark to Shehbaz Sharif Explained

US President Donald Trump heaped praise on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday, while Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stood just behind him. Trump expressed optimism that India and Pakistan could “live very nicely together,” before turning to Sharif and asking, “Right?”, prompting a nod and a smile from the Pakistani leader.

The remarks came during a high-profile gathering aimed at resolving tensions in the Middle East. Trump’s comments, delivered with Sharif in attendance, highlighted both his close ties with Modi and his continued belief in improving relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Trump Calls Modi a ‘Very Good Friend’ and Praises India’s Growth

Speaking on stage at the summit, Trump lauded India as a “great country” and described Modi as “a very good friend” who has done a “fantastic job.” His comments underscored the importance he places on the US-India partnership and the personal rapport he shares with the Indian leader.

“India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top and he has done a fantastic job,” Trump said, referring to Modi. He then added, “I think that Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together,” turning to Sharif for confirmation with a lighthearted “Right?” as the Pakistani prime minister smiled in response.

Sharif himself had earlier praised Trump’s diplomatic interventions, crediting the US president with “stopping a war” between India and Pakistan during their recent military standoff. According to Sharif, Pakistan even sought a Nobel Peace Prize for Trump “for his outstanding and extraordinary contributions” in preventing escalation.

Tariff Threats and Claims of Stopping an India-Pakistan Conflict

Trump once again reiterated his claim that he played a decisive role in halting hostilities between India and Pakistan earlier this year. He told reporters that he had threatened both countries with massive tariffs — “100%, 150%, even 200%” — if they went to war. “They said: ‘No, no, no, don’t do that.’ I said, ‘I’m putting tariffs.’ I had that thing settled in 24 hours,” he claimed while speaking aboard a flight on Sunday.

New Delhi has repeatedly denied that any outside mediation occurred, maintaining that the cessation of hostilities was achieved through bilateral channels. However, Trump continues to assert that his intervention was crucial to the de-escalation.

Pakistan formally nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year, citing his “pivotal leadership” in brokering the ceasefire. The award ultimately went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, but Sharif revived calls for Trump to be honored for his “historic efforts.”

India’s Representation and Modi’s Statement on Hostage Release

While Modi did not attend the Gaza Peace Summit in person, India was represented by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh. Modi later issued a statement welcoming the release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas, calling their freedom “a tribute to the courage of their families, the unwavering peace efforts of President Trump, and the strong resolve of Prime Minister Netanyahu.”

Modi’s praise for Trump’s efforts in the Middle East echoed the US president’s own emphasis on diplomacy and stability. The remarks also highlighted the evolving India-US relationship, which has deepened across strategic, defense, and economic fronts despite ongoing trade disputes.

    Repeated Praise Amid Tariff Tensions

This is not the first time Trump has publicly praised Modi. Even amid escalating tariff disputes, Trump stated in August that he would “always be friends” with the Indian leader — a gesture that Modi later reciprocated. The US recently raised import duties on certain Indian goods to 50%, but both sides have signaled their willingness to maintain strong ties despite economic friction.

Trump’s latest remarks at the Gaza summit, coupled with Sharif’s public praise, underscore the unusual dynamic between the US and the two South Asian rivals. As Trump seeks to position himself as a global peacemaker, his outreach to both Modi and Sharif suggests he hopes to play a continued role in South Asian diplomacy — a region that remains one of the world’s most volatile flashpoints.
