What Time Is the Northern Lights Tonight: How to See the Aurora Borealis

The northern lights are expected to return tonight over Chicago and much of Illinois, giving skywatchers a second chance to see one of nature’s most dazzling displays. After a rare geomagnetic storm illuminated skies as far south as Texas on Tuesday, experts say conditions remain strong for another colorful show Wednesday night.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts a K-index of 8 — a severe geomagnetic storm capable of producing widespread auroras across the U.S. That means Illinois residents could once again see streaks of green, pink, and purple across the northern horizon if clouds cooperate.

Best Time and Place to See the Northern Lights Tonight in Chicago

The aurora will be most visible between 6 p.m. and midnight CST, according to CBS Chicago meteorologists David Yeomans and Sara Machi. Sunset in Chicago occurs around 4:32 p.m., so darkness will settle quickly, allowing the show to begin soon after.

Experts suggest heading to areas with minimal light pollution for the best view. In Chicago, Montrose Beach, North Avenue Beach, and the Adler Planetarium lakefront are popular spots. These locations offer open northern views and darker skies away from the downtown glow.

Nick Sinnott, owner of Chicago Photography Classes, recommends using your phone or camera for better results. “What you will see is a lot of photographers out there with tripods. Don’t be afraid to talk to them,” he said. “We have a really wonderful photographic community here in Chicago that’s always happy to help.”

For clearer shots, set your camera on a tripod, use long exposures, and include foreground elements like trees, the skyline, or Lake Michigan for better composition.

What to Expect from the Aurora Borealis in Illinois

Severe geomagnetic activity like this is rare — occurring only about 60 days per 11-year solar cycle, or roughly 1.4% of the time. When the K-index reaches 8, auroras can extend deep into the U.S. Midwest, creating visible color bands even at lower latitudes.

Viewers may see a faint green or red glow on the northern horizon, or dynamic shimmering waves if activity intensifies. The aurora may appear weaker to the naked eye but show up vividly through cameras using long exposures. Thin clouds may pass over parts of Illinois tonight, but forecasters expect them to remain transparent enough for visibility.

Geomagnetic storms of this level can also briefly interfere with GPS accuracy, radio signals, and satellite operations. However, for most Illinois residents, the only noticeable effect will be a stunning view of the night sky.

Once-in-a-Decade Skywatching Opportunity

With the sun nearing the peak of its 11-year solar cycle, these events are becoming more frequent but remain unpredictable. Seeing the northern lights this far south is extraordinary, and tonight could be one of the best chances for Illinois residents in years.

If skies remain clear between 6 p.m. and midnight, look north and get ready — the aurora borealis could light up Chicago’s horizon once again.
