Netflix is confronting a major copyright lawsuit over its Brazilian Formula One series, Senna. Author Lauren Wild filed the suit in a California federal court. He claims the show unlawfully uses his original script and treatment.

The lawsuit alleges Netflix failed to perform proper due diligence before greenlighting the expensive production. This legal action could disrupt the popular series’ global distribution.

Writer Claims Showrunner Offer Preceded Alleged Theft

Wild states he began developing a Senna project in 2013. He was later introduced to production company Gullane through Warner Bros. executives. His initial feature film concept evolved into a miniseries.

According to the complaint, Wild wrote 11 episodes titled “Built for Speed: Senna.” He registered this work with the U.S. Copyright Office. Gullane then offered him a showrunner position and co-writer role on a related feature film.

Preliminary deal terms were negotiated. No final contract was ever signed. Communications from Gullane suddenly stopped in 2019.

Substantial Similarities Found in Released Series

Netflix released its six-part Senna series in 2024. Wild immediately noticed striking resemblances to his own work. He identified specific characters and plot events he created that appear in the Netflix version.

The production, filmed across South America, represents a massive investment. According to Reuters, the budget exceeded $170 million. This high-stakes claim targets both Netflix and Gullane for copyright infringement and unjust enrichment.

The series was directed by Vicente Amori and Júlia Rezende. Its official writing team does not include Lauren Wild. Netflix has declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.

This lawsuit highlights the critical importance of intellectual property verification in high-budget streaming productions. The outcome of the Senna series case could set a significant precedent for content creation protocols across the entire industry.
