Two popular candy bars have been recalled just days before Halloween after a production error led to potentially dangerous mislabeling. Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory issued a recall notice on October 27 for its Peanut Butter Crush Bars and Cashew Cow Bars due to undeclared nuts, a risk that could cause severe allergic reactions.

The recall has drawn attention from consumers and retailers in Michigan and New York, where the affected products were distributed. With Halloween around the corner, the timing has heightened concern among parents and allergy-sensitive families stocking up on treats for trick-or-treaters.

Details on the Recalled Candy Bars

According to the company, the recall stems from a temporary mix-up in its production line that resulted in packaging errors. Specifically, Zingerman’s Peanut Butter Crush Bars containing cashews and Cashew Cow Bars containing peanuts were distributed in boxes that did not disclose the presence of these allergens.

The affected products include Zingerman’s Peanut Butter Crush Full Size Bars and Cashew Cow Full Size Bars, both marked with Lot #174250. The Peanut Butter Crush Bars come in yellow and purple 2-ounce boxes labeled “Peanut Butter Crush,” while the Cashew Cow Bars are packaged in light blue and yellow boxes labeled “Cashew Cow.” The lot number can be found directly on the product packaging.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall so far. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that people with severe peanut or cashew allergies could experience a life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these mislabeled bars.

A Zingerman’s spokesperson said, “While our range of candy bars is one of our most popular products, the number of bars affected was a tiny fraction of our output. From a single Lot #174250, there were a total of 156 Peanut Butter Crush Bars and 78 Cashew Cow Bars affected by the recall.”

All affected products have been removed from store shelves, and wholesale customers were notified immediately. Consumers who have purchased the recalled items are urged not to consume them. Instead, they should discard the bars or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumer Response and Broader Impact

The recall has prompted renewed awareness around allergy labeling and food safety during the Halloween season. With millions of Americans managing nut allergies, the news underscores how small packaging errors can have major consequences.

Experts advise consumers to double-check candy labels, especially when distributing treats to children. Even trace amounts of peanuts or cashews can trigger anaphylaxis in those with severe allergies. Health professionals also recommend keeping epinephrine auto-injectors accessible during the holidays.

Zingerman’s has apologized for the error and confirmed that the issue has been resolved within its manufacturing line. The company said it is enhancing quality control measures to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

As Halloween approaches, the recall serves as a timely reminder for families to stay vigilant when it comes to food safety—especially with products that may contain hidden allergens.
