A tragic plane crash has claimed seven lives in North Carolina. The accident involved a Cessna jet owned by former NASCAR star Greg Biffle. It crashed at Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday.
Eyewitness Describes Fireball and Heat From Crash
Wingo was letting his dog out when he saw the plane. He immediately called 911 for help. The crash site was close to his property on Old Airport Road.
The witness later learned a friend was on the plane. His friend, Craig Wadsworth, was among the victims. Wadsworth worked as a motor coach driver in NASCAR.
“It hasn’t really hit me yet,” Wingo said. He added, “In my mind, I’m thinking, ‘I watched my friend die.'” He described Wadsworth as a great person who would help anyone.
Community and NASCAR World Mourns Sudden Loss
It also named his daughter, Emma, and friends Craig Wadsworth and Dennis Dutton. Dennis Dutton’s son, Jack, was also killed. The group was traveling together on the private aircraft.
Former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace shared a video tribute. He mourned his dear friend Craig Wadsworth. Wallace called the event a “horrible tragedy” that took wonderful people.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the probe. Official reports may take many months to complete.
