A fresh round of leaks suggests Xiaomi is preparing a notable shift in how it uses secondary displays, with the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro expected to introduce a more capable rear screen built around artificial intelligence features.

The device, along with a larger Pro Max variant, is reportedly on track for a September 2026 release. That timing would place it in direct competition with Apple’s next iPhone lineup, continuing a pattern of closely matched launch windows between the two companies.
Details emerging from the latest tip indicate Xiaomi is not treating the rear display as a novelty. Instead, it is being reworked into what is described as an AI-powered “smart window.” The idea appears to move beyond basic notifications, opening the door to context-aware functions that respond dynamically to user activity.
Among the proposed uses are real-time translation tools and teleprompter-style assistance, features that align with the growing emphasis on content creation and mobile productivity. While such capabilities remain unconfirmed, the direction suggests Xiaomi is attempting to give the secondary screen a clearer purpose than earlier iterations.
Hardware upgrades are also expected to play a central role. The Xiaomi 18 Pro and Pro Max are said to be testing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset, which would mark the company’s first move to a 2nm process. Camera performance, a long-standing focus for Xiaomi, could see further gains through a triple-lens system that includes two 200-megapixel sensors.
For the base Xiaomi 18 model, the addition of a periscope zoom lens is under consideration, potentially narrowing the gap between standard and premium variants in the lineup.
However, the broader industry climate may influence how these devices reach the market. Xiaomi’s chief executive recently pointed to significant increases in RAM costs, describing them as unusually steep. That pressure is expected to affect pricing decisions across the sector, and the Xiaomi 18 series may not be exempt.

With several months remaining before any official announcement, much of the picture is still forming. What is clearer, at least from these early signals, is Xiaomi’s intent to push hardware differentiation in a crowded flagship space, even as underlying component costs continue to rise.
