Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid has publicly challenged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that the country’s current military posture risks pushing its armed forces toward collapse.

In a post that has drawn significant online attention, Lapid said Israel is engaged in multiple fronts without a clear strategic direction. He argued that such an approach is placing unsustainable pressure on the military, raising the prospect of what he described as a looming security crisis.
The remarks come after comments attributed to Israel’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who reportedly raised concerns during a political-security cabinet meeting. Lapid pointed to those warnings as evidence that the strain within the military is no longer confined to internal discussions.
“Anyone who heard him yesterday will not be able to say, ‘I didn’t know,’” Lapid wrote, in what appeared to be a pointed message directed at the government leadership.
According to Lapid’s account, Zamir highlighted a reserve system under mounting pressure, with soldiers stretched across repeated deployments. He referred to reservists being called up for sixth and seventh rotations, suggesting a level of exhaustion that could affect operational readiness.
There were also concerns raised about the allocation of forces. Troops, Lapid said, are being redirected to the West Bank to respond to settler-related violence, further complicating the distribution of already limited manpower.
Israeli media outlets have echoed similar concerns in recent coverage, noting reported shortages and the growing burden on reserve units. A report by Haaretz indicated that the military leadership has also voiced unease over Israel’s standing with former U.S. President Donald Trump, though details of that assessment remain limited.
Not all reactions to Lapid’s criticism have been supportive. Some observers have questioned whether his stance reflects a genuine policy divide. Journalist Chris Fitzgerald argued that Lapid’s critique risks appearing inconsistent, suggesting that similar policies might be pursued under different political leadership.
He added that support for broader strategic positions in Israel is not confined to a single political camp, a point that has circulated in online discussions alongside Lapid’s original post.

The exchange underscores a widening public debate within Israel over military priorities, resource limits, and political accountability at a time of sustained security pressure. For now, the concerns raised by both political and military figures continue to circulate without formal response from the government, leaving the issue unresolved in the public arena.
