China has built a new quantum supercomputer. The supercomputer named ‘Zhuchongzhi-3’, built by researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), is basically a prototype of a superconducting quantum computer.
The researchers claim that the quantum supercomputer can perform mathematical tasks a quadrillion times faster than the world’s most powerful supercomputer and a million times faster than Google’s Sycamore processor. A study on the capabilities of this computer has been published in Physical Review Letters.
Regarding the quantum supercomputer, the researchers said, ‘We have successfully completed random circuit sampling on a larger scale than Google, which has further widened the computational power gap between classical and quantum computing.
This progress has been possible due to optimization of processor speed and wire configuration. Our work is not only pushing the boundaries of quantum computing; rather, we are laying the foundation for a new era. Here, quantum processors can play a significant role in addressing cutting-edge real-world challenges.’
Quantum computing works on the principles of quantum mechanics. This branch of physics studies the strange behavior of particles at the subatomic level. The RCS test tests the capabilities of quantum computers. In this RCS test, Google’s Sycamore processor set a record by completing a random circuit sampling task in 200 seconds in 2019. The Zhuchongzhi-3 supercomputer is said to have been able to work faster than Google’s published results.
Regarding the quantum supercomputer, scientist Zhu Xiaobo said, “The readout accuracy and control capability of the supercomputer in quantum computing have reached a new height. This computer will have an impact on various national security tasks, including artificial intelligence, biology, pharmaceutical production, and so on.”
