France Open World Cup 2026 Campaign Against Senegal at MetLife Stadium

By Tarek HasanJune 16, 20263 Mins Read

France and Senegal met at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon in what was billed as one of the most compelling group stage clashes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match, scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern time, pits two of Africa and Europe’s strongest squads against each other in Group I on Day 7 of the tournament.

France enter as one of the heavy favourites to win the tournament. Kylian Mbappé leads the attack alongside Antoine Griezmann, who continues to play an important creative role despite his advancing years in international football. Coach Didier Deschamps has built a squad that looks considerably more settled than the one that lost the 2022 World Cup final to Argentina on penalties.

Senegal are the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions and arrived at this tournament with genuine belief. Sadio Mané, now 34, is expected to play a key role from the left side, using his experience to support younger attackers who have broken through in recent years. Senegal qualified from their African group without conceding a goal over the final three qualifiers.

The match carries enormous symbolic weight in West Africa, where millions of Senegalese supporters watched their team’s opener. France’s large Senegalese and broader West African diaspora, especially in the Paris region and across North America, made MetLife Stadium feel split almost evenly in the hours before kickoff, with green-and-yellow flags visible across the lower tier.

Group I also includes Iraq and Norway, who played their opener at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, later on Tuesday. France and Senegal both know that a defeat in the opening match, while not fatal, would put immediate pressure on the rest of their group stage schedule.

MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, has a capacity of roughly 82,500, making it one of the largest venues in the tournament. FIFA selected it to host the World Cup final on July 19, underlining its status as the tournament’s flagship stadium in North America.

Senegal’s preparation was briefly disrupted when two squad members reported minor injuries during training on Saturday, though both were declared fit in time for the opener. France’s only real concern was Mbappé’s fitness, which has been monitored closely since a knock in a warm-up match against Portugal earlier this month. He started on Tuesday and was confirmed fit by the French federation the morning of the match.

The stakes for both teams go beyond the three points. A strong opening performance sets the tone for the rest of a World Cup campaign. France’s path to the final runs through the group before a potential knock-out encounter with the Group J winner.
