Ali Hossain Fakir formally assumed office as the new Inspector General of Bangladesh Police today, marking a significant change at the top of the countryâs law enforcement hierarchy.

He replaces Baharul Alam, who had been serving as IGP on a contractual basis since November 20, 2024.
The government appointed Ali yesterday, elevating him from his role as additional inspector general of police and chief of the Armed Police Battalion to the forceâs highest position.
At the Secretariat this morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, accompanied by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, formally pinned the rank badge of IGP on Ali, completing the transition in a brief but symbolic ceremony.
A member of the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre, Ali joined the police force in 1995 as an assistant superintendent of police. Over the years, he served in various capacities before rising through the ranks.
His career, however, has not been without interruption. On November 16, 2022, while serving as commanding officer of Armed Police Battalion-3 during the tenure of the Awami League government, he was sent into forced retirement âin the public interest.â
The interim government reinstated him on August 27, 2024, along with four other officers. That decision effectively brought him back into active service after nearly two years away from duty.
In August 2025, he was promoted from deputy inspector general to supernumerary additional inspector general of police, clearing the way for his elevation to the top post.
His appointment comes at a time when leadership continuity within the force remains a matter of institutional importance. With decades of service behind him, Ali now takes responsibility for steering the police administration as its chief.
