American Airlines puts first 777-300ER Flagship Suite into service

By Saleh MohammadSeptember 7, 20262 Mins Read

The American Airlines first class product is being reshaped as the carrier puts its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER into commercial service, replacing the old First Class layout with a larger Flagship Suite cabin. The airline says the aircraft began service from New York to Buenos Aires on September 2 as part of a wider premium-cabin redesign.

American Airlines first class

American’s newsroom says the 20-aircraft 777-300ER fleet serves long-haul routes to London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Sydney. The redesigned aircraft has 70 Flagship Suite seats with privacy doors, more storage and a chaise-lounge position.

The aircraft has 144 premium seats in total. Along with the 70 suites, it has 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 extra-legroom Main Cabin Extra seats. That configuration gives the airline more premium inventory while using one aircraft type across several high-demand international routes.

The change is a business decision as much as a cabin update. A larger premium cabin can give an airline more seats to sell at higher fares, but those seats also require a consistent service, lounge and connectivity experience. American links the new layout with priority airport services, Flagship Lounge access where available and onboard dining.

Passengers will also find free high-speed Wi-Fi on the 777-300ER fleet, along with wireless charging and USB-C or AC power in the premium sections. American says the main cabin will receive updated inflight entertainment access, so the redesign is not limited to the seats behind the first door.

The rollout changes the meaning of first class on this aircraft. American says Flagship First will no longer be available for purchase on 777-300ER flights beginning November 19. It also says Flagship First will leave transcontinental routes as A321XLR aircraft enter the fleet, starting March 28, 2027.

The first aircraft does not mean every American Airlines flight has the same cabin. Customers need to check the aircraft type and seat map for the date of travel. Aircraft swaps can change the experience, and the airline’s announcement describes the planned product rather than a promise for every route.

The current launch shows American using premium space, privacy and onboard connectivity to compete for long-haul customers. The real test will come as more aircraft receive the retrofit and the airline measures demand, reliability and service costs across the 20-jet fleet.
