Apple has quietly introduced the AirPods Max 2, updating its premium over-ear headphones more than five years after the original model entered the market. The new version arrives with a familiar price tag of $549, alongside a set of refinements that focus on sound quality, noise control, and day-to-day usability.

Preorders are scheduled to open on March 25, with retail availability expected early next month. The company is offering the headphones in five colour options: midnight, starlight, orange, purple and blue, signalling a continued push to position the product as both a technical and lifestyle accessory.
At the centre of the update is Appleâs H2 chip, which underpins several of the deviceâs new capabilities. The company says active noise cancellation is now up to 1.5 times more effective than before, though it has not detailed the testing conditions behind that claim. Alongside this, a feature called Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts between noise cancellation and transparency depending on the surrounding environment, reducing the need for manual switching.
Transparency mode itself has been reworked. Apple points to a new signal-processing approach that aims to make outside sounds feel more natural while listening, allowing users to stay aware of conversations or ambient noise without removing the headphones.
One of the more notable additions is Live Translation, designed for in-person conversations across different languages. The company has not elaborated on supported languages or performance limits, but positions it as part of a broader push into real-time communication tools.
The AirPods Max 2 also introduces voice isolation during calls, using computational audio techniques to prioritise the userâs voice over background noise. Apple says this could benefit not only casual calls but also content creation, including interviews and podcast recordings, where clearer vocal capture is often essential.
On the audio side, a new high-dynamic-range amplifier is intended to deliver cleaner sound, while updates to Spatial Audio aim to improve the placement of instruments and overall balance. The headphones also support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected via the included USB-C cable.
Additional features include a Camera Remote function, allowing users to control photo and video capture on a connected iPhone or iPad using the Digital Crown. A Loud Sound Reduction feature has also been added, aimed at lowering harsh environmental noise without significantly altering the listening experience.

Apple says the AirPods Max 2 will be released in more than 30 countries and regions, though specific market timelines may vary. The update keeps the product aligned with Appleâs broader ecosystem, while focusing on incremental improvements rather than a redesign, suggesting a steady evolution rather than a shift in direction.
