Apple released the iOS 27 public beta on July 14, opening its biggest Siri overhaul to everyday users. The update brings on-device AI processing and a redesigned assistant that understands context, executes tasks across apps, and handles natural language far better than the Siri of the past.

iOS 27 represents Apple’s answer to the broader AI moment—but with a privacy-first approach. Most AI processing happens on-device, keeping personal data away from Apple’s servers and third-party providers. This is the inverse of how cloud-based AI assistants work, trading some capability for vastly more privacy.
Genmoji and Visual Intelligence
The update introduces Genmoji, which creates custom emoji from text descriptions. July’s version adds contact-based Genmoji that generate caricatures of friends based on their contact photos, complete with privacy safeguards so data stays on-device.
Visual Intelligence turns the camera into a real-time search engine. Point your iPhone at a landmark, plant, animal, or product and get instant information. It uses the dedicated Camera Control button on newer iPhones, making it a one-button operation.
Live Translation and Semantic Search
Live Translation enables real-time translation in Messages, FaceTime, and phone calls directly on the device. Speech stays private and never leaves your phone.
The semantic photo search index builds itself on-device, letting you search your entire photo library using natural language. “Photos of me at the beach” or “screenshots from last month” work instantly because Apple built a searchable index of your private photos without ever sending them anywhere.
Developer Tools and Integration
New intelligence frameworks let app developers build AI features into their apps more easily. Developers can tap into powerful models from Apple and third-party providers without building their own inference engines or managing model weights.
The iOS 27 public beta runs on iPhone models from 2019 onward, with general release expected later this fall.
