Netflix on Wednesday unveiled the first images from Brazil 70 The Third Star, a new fiction miniseries revisiting the Brazilian national team’s run to its third World Cup title in 1970. Alongside the photographs, the streaming platform released an exclusive video introducing Lucas Agrícola as Pelé, Rodrigo Santoro as João Saldanha and Bruno Mazzeo as Mário Zagallo.

The images show a carefully recreated squad that many Brazilian fans still consider the finest in the country’s history. In the stands and on the pitch, viewers will recognize portrayals of Tostão, played by Ravel Andrade; Félix, portrayed by Hugo Haddad; and Carlos Alberto, played by Caio Cabral. Jairzinho appears through Gui Ferraz, Gérson through Fillipe Soutto and Rivellino through Daniel Blanco.
Produced by Netflix in partnership with O2 Filmes, the series is scheduled to premiere later this year.
According to the producers, the miniseries aims to reconstruct not only the iconic plays that sealed Brazil’s third title, but also the tension and uncertainty surrounding the team’s preparation. The story unfolds during one of the most complex periods in Brazilian political life, set against the most repressive phase of the military regime, while the national squad carried the weight of public expectation onto the field.
General direction is shared by Paulo Morelli and Pedro Morelli, with episodes also directed by Quico Meirelles. The series was created by Naná Xavier and Rafael Dornellas. Production responsibilities are again led by Paulo and Pedro Morelli alongside Cris Abi, with Guto Gontijo serving as executive producer. Final script credits are shared between Naná Xavier and Felipe Sant’Angelo.
The wider cast includes Marcelo Adnet as Eusébio Teixeira, Bruna Mascarenhas as Rosemeri, Maicon Rodrigues as Paulo Cézar Caju, Val Perré as Mário Américo, Lara Tremouroux as Rosa, Felipe Frazão as Leo, Victor Salomão as Dadá Maravilha and José Beltrão as Parreira.
For O2 Filmes, the project adds to a catalogue built since 1991 under the leadership of Andrea Barata Ribeiro, Fernando Meirelles and Paulo Morelli. The company has produced around 9,000 commercials and feature films including City of God, which received four Academy Award nominations, and Marighella, winner of seven awards at the 2022 Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro.
On television, O2’s recent productions include Pssica for Netflix, Raul Seixas: Eu Sou for Globoplay, City of God for Max, Cangaço Novo and Manhãs de Setembro for Prime Video, and As Aventuras de José e Durval for Globoplay. Through its distribution arm O2 Play, the company has released nearly 400 titles to date.
Netflix, which operates globally with a catalogue spanning series, films, games and live events, said members will be able to watch the miniseries upon release under the platform’s standard subscription model.
