BYD Reclaims Global EV Crown With 557,000 Q2 Deliveries, Outselling Tesla

By Tusher DebnathJuly 25, 20262 Mins Read

BYD delivered 557,090 battery electric vehicles in Q2 2026. Tesla delivered 480,126. BYD is now the world’s leading seller of fully electric cars. This is not a projection or an estimate. It is the actual number for the quarter.

BYD Tesla EV sales Q2

Tesla posted its strongest Q2 performance ever. Record profits. Record deliveries. Record everything. It was not enough.

How BYD Won

BYD sells globally. First-half overseas deliveries reached 792,256 vehicles, up 71% year-over-year. That is aggressive international expansion. BYD did not just beat Tesla in China. It beat Tesla everywhere.

Price also matters. BYD makes affordable EVs. The starting price for many BYD models is well below Tesla. BYD also makes plug-in hybrids alongside pure battery cars. That gives customers options Tesla does not offer.

Battery supply helps. BYD makes its own batteries. Tesla buys from suppliers. When battery demand surges, BYD can increase production faster than Tesla can negotiate new contracts.

Tesla’s Strong Quarter

Do not misread the numbers. Tesla’s Q2 was exceptional by any standard. The company increased deliveries 5.7% sequentially from Q1. That is remarkable for a mature company.

But BYD grew faster. The Chinese EV market is massive. Imports face tariffs and regulatory friction. BYD benefits from being local. The company sells in Europe and Southeast Asia too, but China is the engine.

What Comes Next

Tesla will fight back. Price cuts could accelerate. New models are coming. But BYD has scale, vertical integration, and geographic reach. The margin for error is widening.

This trend will likely continue. BYD is already planning even larger factories. Expect BYD to maintain the lead in absolute EV sales for the rest of 2026.

The electric car market is no longer Tesla’s to lose. BYD is the new leader.
