For many shoppers, the $1.50 hot dog combo at Costco has long stood as a quiet constant in a retail landscape that rarely stays still. Even as prices climbed across food courts and grocery aisles, the familiar pairing of a quarter-pound all-beef hot dog and a fountain soda held its ground, unchanged for decades.

That consistency has now met a modest adjustment.
Costco has introduced a new option that allows members to swap the traditional 20-ounce refillable soda for a 16.9-ounce bottle of Kirkland Signature water, without altering the price. The move does not touch the core of the offering. The hot dog itself remains the same, served on a soft bun with access to standard condiments at the food court.
What shifts is the drink.
The bottled water alternative appears designed to meet a range of practical preferences. Some customers favor a resealable bottle as they continue shopping. Others avoid soda altogether, whether for dietary reasons or personal choice. The change also creates a no-calorie option within a combo that has historically been tied to sugary drinks.
Even so, the adjustment has prompted a split response among regulars.
For those accustomed to the original setup, the refillable soda still represents a better deal, offering both a larger serving and the ability to refill at no extra cost. Others see the bottled water as a small but meaningful improvement, aligning the combo more closely with how they actually consume it.
The balance Costco has maintained over the years—holding the line on price while preserving a sense of familiarity—remains largely intact. The introduction of choice, rather than a replacement, suggests a cautious approach to change.
