Cracker Barrel has spent the past year learning, again, how emotionally attached many Americans are to the brandâs old-fashioned image and familiar routines. Now the company has introduced a new internal policy tied to travel and meals, and the reaction has been notably different from the backlash that followed earlier changes.
This time, the rule is aimed at employees who travel for work and expect their meals to be reimbursed. According to an internal message obtained by The Wall Street Journal, Cracker Barrel is telling traveling staff to eat at Cracker Barrel stores for all or the majority of their meals while on the road, whenever it is practical based on location and schedule.
The guidance also tightens reimbursement rules for alcohol. Employees are not expected to receive reimbursements for alcohol purchases during business trips unless they have prior approval from senior management. The internal message says exceptions for special occasions must be pre-approved by an E-Team member. Staff can still purchase alcohol while traveling, but they would pay out of pocket.
Public response has been mixed, but some Americans have taken the change as a rare example of a corporate policy that could force decision-makers closer to the day-to-day experience of customers. Several supportive reactions have framed the policy as a form of executives being made to live with the consequences of food and service decisions.
One Reddit user argued that even if the motivation is questionable, the impact could be useful because it pushes company leaders to become regular customers at their own chain. Another wrote that it can help executives notice when cost-saving moves reduce quality or service, because they are experiencing the same product as diners.
The change arrives after a stretch of controversy for the company. Cracker Barrelâs rebranding effort in August 2025 sparked public outcry, including criticism from conservative commentators and MAGA influencers who labeled the change âwoke.â The company ultimately reversed the logo update that removed its longtime mascot, Uncle Herschel, and issued a statement acknowledging it could have done a better job explaining its direction while promising that familiar features of the stores would remain.
Around the same period, Cracker Barrel also faced complaints about modernized interiors and later drew criticism after menu changes in December. The companyâs reputation took additional knocks amid debate over informal overnight RV etiquette in 2025, including rumors that it would abolish overnight stays, which a representative later addressed.
For some observers, the new travel dining rule feels less like a cultural shift and more like a business decision that might expose leadership to what customers have been debating for months. Whether it actually improves food and service is not yet clear, but the policy has landed in a calmer place than Cracker Barrelâs previous attempts to change how the brand looks and feels.
