The Gilderoy Lockhart search is spiking after HBO recast the Harry Potter character for the series’ second season, with Kit Harington taking over from Nicholas Hoult.
TheWrap reported that Hoult left the role because production scheduling conflicted with his other projects. Harington, known globally for Game of Thrones, will play the famous Defense Against the Dark Arts professor when the series reaches the Chamber of Secrets storyline.
TVLine said Harington’s connection to the role is not entirely new. He previously voiced Lockhart in the full-cast Harry Potter audiobook released in 2025. The live-action role was previously associated with Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.
The recasting comes before the HBO series has reached its second-season story on screen. The first season is scheduled to begin with Harry’s first year, while Lockhart appears later in the books. That means Harington is not expected to appear as Lockhart in the first season’s main story.
The change has created a fresh search angle around both actors: Hoult’s exit, Harington’s casting and the production timetable. TheWrap’s report attributed the scheduling explanation to a person with knowledge of the change, while TVLine confirmed the new casting and the audiobook connection. HBO’s final release plans for the second season remain separate from this casting announcement.
