Grand Theft Auto 6 is confirmed for release in 2026 on both Xbox and PlayStation, according to the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 and Rockstar Games’ most recent public communications. The arrival marks the end of one of the longest waits in video game history — GTA 5 launched in 2013.

The Xbox Games Showcase confirmed GTA 6 will be available on Xbox at launch, settling earlier uncertainty about whether Rockstar would give PlayStation a head start. A simultaneous cross-platform release is now the prevailing expectation, though Rockstar has not confirmed a specific date beyond the 2026 window.
GTA 6 is set in a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding area. Rockstar’s December 2023 trailer confirmed a female lead protagonist and a dual-protagonist structure, but the company has revealed almost nothing officially since. The gaming press has tracked the game’s progress through business filings, ratings board submissions, and Rockstar job listings.
The scale of anticipation is significant by almost any measure. GTA 5 has sold over 200 million copies across its various platform releases and remains one of the most commercially successful entertainment products ever created. Rockstar sustains that performance through GTA Online, the multiplayer component that continues generating revenue more than a decade after the base game launched.
A 2026 release puts GTA 6 in the same calendar as Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games, making the second half of 2026 one of the most competitive release periods for major publishers in years. Both games are expected to target the same core gaming demographic, though GTA’s open-world format typically draws a wider casual audience than a superhero action game.
PC release timing has not been confirmed. Rockstar has historically launched GTA on consoles first with a PC version following six months to a year later, and there is no indication that pattern will change for GTA 6.
