One day after turning 19, Lamine Yamal was nearly awarded a goal in Spain’s 2-0 semifinal win over France. The Barcelona winger was flagged offside on a close call that came shortly after Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s lead in the 58th minute.

Yamal’s intelligence and speed created the penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted to open Spain’s scoring. His movement in transition play has disrupted defenses throughout the tournament, forcing veteran defenders into difficult decisions.
Youngest Generation Dominates Spain’s Final Run
Yamal is one of two teenagers starting for Spain in the World Cup semifinal. Pau Cubarsí, another Barcelona academy product, shared the pitch. In the last 60 years of World Cup history, only seven teenagers have ever started a semifinal. Two of them were fielded by Spain on the same night.
The Barcelona academy has developed Spain’s spine. Both teens were granted minutes that older players might not receive, a gamble that paid off immediately.
The Record Books Keep Updating
At 19 years and 1 day old, Yamal became the second-youngest player in the last 60 years to draw a penalty in a World Cup knockout match. His World Cup record stands at 6 goals, compared to Kylian Mbappé‘s 0 at the same stage in 2022.
Spain will face either Argentina or England in the final on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Yamal’s role in the team’s attack will remain central, regardless of opponent.
Yamal’s World Cup journey is rewriting the age book. Nineteen years old and already setting benchmarks for future generations.
