Mercedes-Benz has begun revealing details of a new electric vehicle that sits somewhere between a luxury sedan, a limousine service shuttle, and a traditional multipurpose van. The model, known as the Mercedes VLE, signals the companyâs latest attempt to rethink how premium passenger vehicles are designed as electrification spreads across its lineup.
Early previews of the VLE show a vehicle that Mercedes prefers to describe as a âgrand limousine,â although its proportions clearly place it in the large MPV category. The design reflects a long-wheelbase structure and a tall cabin aimed at maximizing interior space rather than following the low, sweeping lines typical of luxury sedans.
The vehicle replaces the existing EQV in many markets and becomes the first passenger model built on Mercedes-Benzâs new VAN.EA platform, which has been developed specifically for electric vans and large multi-passenger vehicles.
Electric Platform Built For Space And Range
Mercedes plans to launch the VLE initially with two electric powertrains powered by a 115 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery.
The entry-level VLE300 uses a single electric motor driving the front wheels and produces a claimed 272 horsepower. A more powerful VLE400 4Matic version adds a second motor on the rear axle to deliver all-wheel drive and a combined output of 409 horsepower.
The company estimates that the all-wheel-drive version can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in about 6.5 seconds.
Driving range is one of the central selling points. On the European WLTP testing cycle the vehicle is expected to travel up to 404 miles on a full charge. Under U.S. EPA testing standards that figure is expected to land closer to roughly 360 miles.
The VLE uses an 800-volt electrical system designed to support high-speed charging. Mercedes says the vehicle could add close to 200 miles of driving range in around fifteen minutes when connected to high-capacity DC fast chargers.
A lower-cost variant with an 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery is also planned for North America later in the modelâs lifecycle.
Interior Designed Around Rear Passengers
While the electric powertrain is important, the VLEâs defining feature is the interior layout.
Mercedes has focused heavily on rear passenger comfort, positioning the vehicle as a premium transport solution for executives, families, and chauffeur services.
Inside, the seating system uses sliding floor rails that allow individual seats or bench rows to be rearranged. Depending on configuration, the vehicle can carry anywhere from two to eight passengers.
Individual seats weigh roughly 45 pounds and include small wheels underneath so they can be rolled in or out of the vehicle when rearranging the layout.
In the highest trim level, Mercedes installs âgrand comfortâ rear seats wrapped in leather. These seats can face forward or rearward and include features such as wireless phone charging, lumbar support, massage functions, and calf support.
Rear passengers are also the focus of one of the VLEâs most striking features. A 31.3-inch widescreen display folds down from the ceiling and offers 8K resolution. The screen supports split viewing, allowing video calls on one side while other passengers stream entertainment.
An eight-megapixel rear-facing camera enables video conferencing from the cabin.
Size And Driving Technology
Physically the VLE is larger than many familiar passenger vehicles.
The long-wheelbase version expected for North America stretches nearly 216 inches in length, slightly longer than a Cadillac Escalade. The added space is concentrated between the front and rear doors to expand the rear passenger area.
Despite its size, Mercedes says maneuverability remains manageable thanks to an available rear-wheel steering system capable of turning the rear wheels up to seven degrees. The company claims this reduces the turning circle to roughly 37 feet.
The vehicle can also be equipped with air suspension that adjusts ride height by about 1.5 inches. Mercedes says the system uses map data to automatically lower the vehicle for improved aerodynamic efficiency during travel.
Inside the front cabin, drivers are greeted by a digital dashboard setup that includes a 10.3-inch instrument cluster and two 14-inch infotainment displays running the companyâs latest MB.OS software platform.
Launch Timing And Market Position
Mercedes expects the VLE to reach North American markets sometime in 2027 as a 2028 model.
Estimated pricing currently places the vehicle between roughly 85,000 and 96,000 dollars depending on specification.
The company also plans an even more luxurious variant known as the VLS, which will sit closer to the pricing and positioning of Mercedesâ flagship S-Class models.
For now, the VLE represents a new direction for the brandâs larger passenger vehicles. Rather than competing directly with traditional luxury sedans or large SUVs, Mercedes appears to be testing whether a high-end electric MPV can carve out its own space in the premium market.
Whether buyers will embrace the idea of a limousine-style van remains to be seen. But the VLE shows that the company believes the future of luxury transport may look very different from the past.
