Milwaukee is refreshing a familiar part of its cordless-tool system with a smaller battery that is designed to deliver more power. The new M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5 and XC5 Resistant packs are aimed at users who already own M18 tools and want stronger output without moving to a larger battery platform.

The announcement matters because the XC5 is replacing the existing M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 pack. Milwaukee says the new battery delivers 50% more power than the model it replaces. It keeps a 5Ah rating, so the headline change is power delivery rather than a jump in stated capacity.

Milwaukee places the new pack at PWR Level 3 on its REDLITHIUM power scale. The company says that matches the power output of its High Output XC6.0 battery. The comparison comes with an important trade-off: the new XC5 is rated as 25% smaller and 30% lighter than the XC6.0.

That size difference could matter on tools that are used overhead or carried around a job site for hours. A lighter pack can make a drill, saw or fastening tool easier to handle. It does not mean the XC5 will run longer than every larger pack. The standard rating remains 5Ah, while the XC6.0 offers 6Ah of capacity.

Milwaukee attributes the performance change to several internal updates. The company points to tabless cell technology, revised electronics and power routing, and improved thermal management. Those changes are intended to help the pack handle demanding applications while supporting durability and battery life. The manufacturer’s claims should be read as product specifications, not as a guarantee of the same runtime in every tool or job.

A second version, the M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5 Resistant, is built for harsher work environments. Milwaukee says the resistant pack adds protection against oils, greases and solvents. That version is intended for transportation maintenance and manufacturing settings, where contact with those materials is more likely. It carries the same 5Ah rating as the standard XC5.

Compatibility is one of the more practical parts of the update. Milwaukee says both packs remain compatible with the full M18 system, which now includes more than 300 solutions. Users can therefore add the battery to existing drills, saws, impact tools and other M18 equipment without changing platforms. The exact performance gain will still depend on the tool, material and workload.

Milwaukee lists the standard XC5 at $169 and the XC5 Resistant at $209, with a three-year battery warranty. The company also says starter kits, two-packs and a 10-pack are planned for purchase in 2027. Prices, stock and launch timing can vary by country, so buyers should check the local Milwaukee site or an authorised distributor before treating the announcement as a local availability notice.

The Milwaukee M18 XC5 battery update is therefore about the balance between power, weight and compatibility. Users who value a lighter pack may prefer it over the larger XC6.0, while heavy workloads that benefit from extra capacity may still favour the 6Ah option. Existing M18 owners have a new route to higher output, but the right choice will depend on the tool and the kind of work it must do.
