A magnitude 4.0 earthquake shook Dhaka and neighboring regions on Monday evening at 9:28 p.m., sending residents out of buildings and into open spaces as a precaution. The tremor originated 16 kilometers northeast of the capital in Rupganj, Narayanganj, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department classified the tremor as “light” intensity. The epicenter lay 16 kilometers from the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon. Despite the moderate magnitude, residents reported feeling the earthquake more strongly than expected for a quake of this size.
Many people evacuated their apartments in multi-story buildings, moving to open areas as a safety precaution. No immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage emerged in the hours following the tremor.
Monday’s earthquake continues a pattern of tremors originating within Bangladesh boundaries since November 2025, marking a departure from historical seismic trends. Previously, most earthquakes affecting Dhaka originated from outside the country’s borders.
Seismologists have attributed increased domestic earthquake activity to geological shifts in the region. The BMD continues monitoring seismic activity and urges residents to follow established safety protocols when tremors occur.
