An 18-year-old NEET candidate died by suicide at her home in the city after allegedly hanging herself from a ceiling fan, police said on Sunday, even as her family said they were unable to understand what may have troubled her.

The student, identified as Bhagyashree, had recently appeared for the NEET-UG examination and was described by her family as academically bright and disciplined. Her father, Rajashekhar, told reporters that she had secured 92 per cent marks in the PUC examination and had also performed well in NEET.
Speaking briefly to the media amid visible grief, he said there had been no conflict or distress within the family. “There was no distress or problem in our family, and we were living happily,” he said.
According to him, preparations for the future had been progressing normally, and the family had no indication that she was under emotional strain. He said his daughter may have been carrying thoughts about appearing for the examination again, but added that he did not wish to blame anyone or draw conclusions in the absence of clarity.
“She had performed well in NEET, everything was going well. Maybe she had some feelings in her mind about writing it again. I do not blame anyone, I do not accuse anyone. We do not know her pain or suffering,” he said.
Police sources said no suicide note was found at the house, and no immediate reason behind the death has emerged so far. A case has been registered under the jurisdiction of the Station Bazaar police station, and further inquiry is underway.
The incident comes at a time when uncertainty surrounding this year’s NEET-UG examination has affected many candidates and families across the country. The examination held on May 3 was later cancelled following allegations of a question paper leak.
The National Testing Agency has since announced that a re-examination will be conducted on June 21.
