Pocket-Sized Apple Pencil for iPhone Fold Reportedly Tested

By Soniya ChowdhurySeptember 2, 20264 Mins Read

Apple reportedly tested a pocket-sized Apple Pencil for its expected foldable iPhone. The shorter stylus was developed during work on the new device, but current reports suggest Apple may not release it.

The report arrives days before Apple’s September 9 event. Apple has confirmed the event itself, but it has not announced a foldable iPhone, its final name, or Apple Pencil support.

Apple tested a shorter Pencil for the foldable iPhone

The reported Apple Pencil was smaller than the versions built for iPad. Its shorter body was designed around the dimensions of Apple’s foldable phone.

The prototype could reportedly attach magnetically to the phone. That attachment would also provide a way to store and charge the Pencil.

The idea makes sense because the expected inner display is much larger than a normal iPhone screen. Current reports point to an inner screen of about 7.8 inches and an outer display near 5.5 inches.

That would give the device enough room for handwriting, drawing, document marking and detailed photo edits. It could also make handwritten notes practical without carrying an iPad.

Testing a product does not mean Apple plans to sell it. Companies routinely build prototypes while deciding which features can survive engineering, cost and usability tests.

Current reporting says the compact Apple Pencil is unlikely to appear at the September event. That makes the reported prototype more significant as evidence of Apple’s experiments than as a confirmed accessory.

Foldable display raises a harder stylus question

A folding screen creates problems that standard iPhone displays do not face. The flexible inner panel must repeatedly bend while remaining thin enough to close inside the device.

Stylus pressure adds another issue. Repeated writing or drawing puts direct force on a small area of the display, which may increase concerns about visible marks or long-term wear.

This helps explain why Apple could test Pencil support without approving it for release. A stylus has to feel precise while avoiding damage to a screen designed to bend thousands of times.

Storage is another problem. A full-sized Apple Pencil would be awkward beside a phone, while a smaller model gives Apple less room for its battery and internal components.

Magnetic attachment could solve part of that problem. It would still need to remain secure when users place the folded phone inside pockets or bags.

Many reported iPhone Fold specifications remain unconfirmed

Apple has not confirmed the name of its expected folding phone. Reports have used both iPhone Fold and iPhone Ultra, so neither should be treated as the official product name yet.

A book-style design has appeared consistently across recent reporting. The phone is expected to open into a screen closer to a small tablet while retaining a separate display for normal use when closed.

Reports have also linked the device with Apple’s next-generation A20 chip and a redesigned camera system. Exact camera specifications, battery capacity and final hardware configurations remain uncertain before Apple’s announcement.

This distinction matters because leaked specifications often change during product development. Battery figures in particular have varied between reports, making any single capacity difficult to treat as settled.

Apple has officially scheduled its next event for September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The company has not publicly said which iPhone models will appear there.

If the foldable iPhone is introduced, the larger question will be how Apple adapts iOS to the unusual screen size. Stylus support would be one possible extension of that work, but the reported pocket-sized Pencil may remain inside Apple’s prototype labs.

The most reliable detail for now is narrower. Apple reportedly experimented with a compact Apple Pencil for its foldable phone, while its commercial release remains doubtful.
