Pokémon Wild Card will take the franchise’s card game into a new animated feature. The Pokémon Company says the film is planned for theatrical release in 2027. It has not announced a full release date, so the year is the firm timing currently available to audiences.

The film follows Mikiya, a Pokémon Trading Card Game player, and his partner Mimikyu. That focus makes Wild Card different from a standard journey built around gym battles. The story will be tied to the strategy, collecting and personal rivalries that define the card game, although the official material has not yet disclosed the full plot.

The announcement came at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco. The event is a natural place to introduce a film built around competitive cards. It puts the movie in front of players who already understand decks, matchups and the work behind a tournament run.

Pokémon’s official film page lists Katsuhiko Kitada as director, Akemi Hayashi as character designer and CloverWorks as the animation studio. STORY inc. is listed for production. Those credits give the project a clear creative team while the studio keeps the wider cast and trailer details under wraps.

Oricon reported that the film will be the first Pokémon animated movie based on the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It also described the project as the franchise’s first animated theatrical film since 2020’s Secrets of the Jungle. That gap gives Wild Card a separate place in the series, even though Pokémon animation has continued in television and other formats.
