Spider-Man Brand New Day sets $168 million opening day record

By Tusher DebnathAugust 3, 20262 Mins Read

Spider-Man: Brand New Day pulled in 168 million dollars at the North American box office on its opening Friday, the biggest single day in domestic box office history. The film played across 4,487 theaters and beat the previous single-day record of 157 million dollars set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

That Friday total included 72 million dollars from Wednesday preview screenings, itself a new record for early access showings. The film, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, opened wide on July 31 after months of anticipation built around a cast list packed with surprise cameo appearances.

Studio projections point to a domestic opening weekend near 325 million dollars, which Sony says would rank as the second-highest domestic launch of all time. Rival estimates from box office trackers run as high as 358 million dollars, a figure that would surpass Avengers: Endgame’s all-time opening weekend record of 357 million dollars set in 2019. Audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore, while critics have kept it at 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Certified Fresh tier, with the audience score at 98 percent.

The cast includes returning faces from across Holland’s Spider-Man run, among them Naomi Watts, Florence Pugh, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, a mix that has kept fans discussing the film’s surprises since release. The record preview haul of 72 million dollars alone outpaced the entire opening weekend of many major releases this year, underlining how much pent-up demand had built around the film heading into its release.

If the higher rival estimates hold once final numbers are confirmed, Brand New Day would not only break the single-day opening record but also claim the biggest opening weekend in box office history, a milestone that has stood since Endgame’s release more than six years ago. The film’s combination of a rare A CinemaScore and a 90 percent Certified Fresh rating from critics gives it one of the strongest overall reception profiles of any release so far this year, based on the scores recorded at launch.
