The company also crushed expectations in energy storage. Tesla deployed 13.5 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage and related products in Q2, up a staggering 53% quarter-over-quarter from Q1’s 8.8 GWh. This outpaced the delivery growth rate and suggests the energy business has become Tesla’s fastest-expanding segment.
Production vs. Deliveries: Inventory Drawdown
Production totaled 451,758 units in Q2, meaning deliveries exceeded production by over 28,000 units. This unusual gap reflects Tesla drawing down inventory it built up through Q1, a sign the company successfully cleared backlogs during the quarter.
The stronger-than-expected deliveries came despite persistent headwinds in the US market, where consumers have increasingly shifted toward hybrid vehicles amid economic uncertainty. Federal EV tax incentives expiring has also reduced demand for fully electric vehicles domestically.
Earnings Call Focuses on Margins, Not Volume
Tesla is scheduled to report Q2 2026 earnings after market close today (July 22) at 5:30 p.m. ET. Wall Street expects roughly $26.4 billion in revenue, with earnings per share around $0.53. But the real test lies in gross margin—whether Tesla can sustain profitability at these higher volumes or whether price competition has squeezed it.
Energy Business Stealing the Show
The 53% quarter-over-quarter growth in energy storage is the biggest story nobody’s talking about. This segment is becoming material to Tesla’s overall business, with massive demand from grid operators and industrial users needing backup power and load shifting solutions.
