Early talk about Xiaomi’s next flagship cycle is already beginning to circulate, even as the current Xiaomi 17 series only recently reached European markets. Industry watchers and smartphone enthusiasts are now turning their attention to what could arrive next, with the Xiaomi 18 Ultra becoming the center of those discussions.
Two separate leakers have recently commented on the future model, suggesting that Xiaomi is already exploring changes to its camera system. The device is expected to arrive as the successor to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and the Leica-branded variant that Xiaomi produces in partnership with the German camera company.
At this stage, the only firm technical expectation surrounding the Xiaomi 18 generation concerns the processor. Reports indicate that Xiaomi will likely use Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset, a platform expected to be introduced later this year.
Beyond the processor, attention has shifted almost entirely to the camera hardware. In China, a well-known leaker who posts under the name Smart Pikachu recently hinted that Xiaomi could launch the Xiaomi 18 Ultra toward the end of 2026, potentially in December.
That same comment suggested the possibility of a redesigned device featuring a large 6.9-inch display and a revised ultra-wide camera. The leaker also mentioned the idea of a quad-camera setup, although it remains unclear whether that configuration would appear on the Ultra model or a separate variant such as a Pro Max edition.
Another source, Indian leaker Kartikey Singh, has offered a different perspective. According to Singh, Xiaomi may not return to a quad-camera system at all. Instead, the company could focus its efforts on advancing optical zoom technology.
The current Xiaomi telephoto approach reportedly centers around a 200-megapixel sensor that operates within a focal range of roughly 75 mm to 100 mm. Singh’s comments suggest Xiaomi may attempt to expand that range, potentially moving closer to continuous optical zoom capability.
While the exact method has not been revealed, the implication is that Xiaomi engineers are working to extend the reach of optical zoom without relying heavily on digital cropping or hybrid techniques.
The Leica collaboration also appears likely to continue. Singh claims that a special Leica edition of the Xiaomi 18 Ultra has already received approval from both companies. If that project moves forward, the Leica-branded version could again appear as a premium variant.
In Europe, the naming of that model remains uncertain. One possibility mentioned in early discussions is a follow-up to the Leica Leitzphone line, which could appear under a name such as Leitzphone 2.
For now, these details remain early signals rather than confirmed product plans. Still, the conversation surrounding the Xiaomi 18 Ultra suggests that camera development will again sit at the center of Xiaomi’s flagship ambitions.
If the rumored zoom improvements materialize, the device could mark another step in the ongoing effort by smartphone manufacturers to push optical photography further into territory once reserved for dedicated cameras.
