President Donald Trump unveiled a converted Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar as the United States’ new Air Force One on Friday, June 19, in a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The aircraft arrived ahead of schedule and was presented with a new red, white and blue livery that replaces the pale blue exterior used since the Kennedy administration.

Trump described the plane as “virtually double the size” of the aircraft it is temporarily replacing and called it a gift of significant value. The Boeing 747-8 was originally a Qatari royal family jet valued at approximately $400 million. It has been refitted to serve as a presidential transport while the United States awaits the delivery of two new Boeing VC-25B jets originally ordered for presidential use.

Those Boeing jets have been delayed repeatedly. A delivery originally scheduled for 2024 has been pushed to at least mid-2028. Trump said the administration was in a “little bit of a logjam” waiting for the new aircraft and described the Qatari gift as a practical and patriotic solution. The plane’s reception at Andrews drew applause from military personnel and administration officials gathered for the event.

The new livery features a navy blue underbelly with a red stripe, the presidential seal on the left side where Trump boards, and a large American flag on the tail. Trump approved the design, which represents a significant visual departure from the understated blue and white scheme that defined presidential aircraft for more than six decades.

The gift from Qatar drew earlier criticism from some members of Congress, who raised questions about foreign gifts to a sitting president and potential conflicts of interest. Trump and his team have maintained the transfer was lawful and in the national interest.

Trump announced the aircraft will be used in a ceremonial flyover above Washington on July 4, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The July 4 event is expected to be a major public celebration. Trump’s economic approval has been under pressure recently, making the visual spectacle of a new presidential plane an opportunity for a positive moment.

Qatar has been an active diplomatic partner for the Trump administration on several fronts in recent months, including involvement in Middle East ceasefire negotiations. The gift of the aircraft has been part of a broader warming of relations between Washington and Doha.

No permanent Air Force One replacement is expected before the VC-25B jets complete their delayed production schedule. The Qatari 747 is being treated as an interim solution. Trump’s diplomatic week has not been without friction — his clash with Italy’s Giorgia Meloni over comments made after the G7 summit continued to generate headlines on Friday. The World Cup and domestic politics are both running at full pace as the country heads toward its Independence Day holiday.
