Abdur Rahman Khan Named Bangladesh Alternate Executive Director at World Bank

By Soniya ChowdhuryAugust 24, 20262 Mins Read

Abdur Rahman Khan has been appointed Bangladesh’s alternate executive director at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration. The keyword Abdur Rahman Khan World Bank refers to this three-year appointment.

The former National Board of Revenue chairman will serve for three years from the date he joins the post. The appointment is contractual and was reported on August 23 by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha and The Daily Star.

The notification says his post-retirement leave and related benefits will be suspended during the assignment. It also requires him to sever employment or professional relationships with other professions, businesses and public or private organisations while he holds the World Bank role.

An alternate executive director works within the constituency structure used by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors. The representatives present policy priorities, economic interests and development concerns for the countries in their constituency.

Bangladesh’s appointment therefore places a former senior revenue official in a role connected with the country’s relationship with the international lending institution. The reports do not announce any new World Bank financing decision or project linked to the appointment.

The other terms of the contract will be set out in the relevant agreement, according to the government notification cited by both reports. His term will be counted from the joining date, so the formal start of the assignment remains a separate administrative step.
