Ariana Grande steps back from public work after tour

Ariana Grande will step back from public-facing work after wrapping her Eternal Sunshine world tour, and has withdrawn from the upcoming West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park With George,” according to a representative for the singer.

Grande’s Eternal Sunshine tour is scheduled to conclude in London on September 1. A representative for the singer said she intends to take “a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances,” citing what was described as ongoing public scrutiny over the past year. The statement did not specify a timeline for her return to acting or touring.

Grande had been set to reunite with her “Wicked” co-star Jonathan Bailey for the West End production, a casting pairing that had generated significant excitement among theater fans following the pair’s on-screen chemistry in the two-part Wicked films. Producers of “Sunday in the Park With George” confirmed Grande’s exit this week and said the London revival, now set to open in summer 2027, will cast a new lead in her place.

The Grammy-winning singer and actor has had an unusually busy few years, releasing new music, headlining a global arena tour, and starring in two major film productions back to back. Her representative’s statement did not detail specific plans beyond the step back, though it distinguished the decision as a deliberate pause rather than a retirement from performing.

News of Grande’s decision drew a wide reaction from fans and fellow performers, many expressing support for the singer’s choice to prioritize her wellbeing. NBC News reported that the scrutiny referenced in the announcement has centered largely on commentary about her health and appearance, a subject Grande has addressed publicly in interviews over the past year. Coverage from Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter each noted that Grande has not announced any new projects to follow the conclusion of her current tour, leaving her next public appearance uncertain for now. Representatives for the production said casting for a replacement lead would be announced closer to the 2027 opening.
