Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey crosses $650 million worldwide

By Tarek HasanAugust 5, 20262 Mins Read

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has crossed $650 million at the global box office after just two weekends in theaters, marking the strongest hold of any film in the director’s career, according to studio figures reported this week.

The film has generated $652 million worldwide since its release, split between $362 million from international markets and $289 million domestically. In its second weekend in North America, the film earned another $90 million from 3,943 theaters, a drop of just 27 percent from its opening weekend haul of $123.5 million. That decline is unusually small for a major theatrical release and represents the best second-weekend hold of Nolan’s career, ahead of “The Dark Knight,” which fell to $75.1 million in its own second weekend in 2008.

Industry trackers noted that among films that opened above $100 million, “The Odyssey” now has the third-best hold in box office history, trailing only “Wicked” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Strong word of mouth and premium format ticket sales, including a large share from IMAX screenings, have been credited with sustaining audience turnout into the second weekend rather than the typical steep drop-off.

The film, an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, also became Nolan’s highest-grossing release in India, according to regional trade reports, with the country contributing meaningfully to the film’s international total.

Nolan’s past films, including “Oppenheimer” and “Interstellar,” have historically built momentum through similarly strong holds rather than front-loaded openings, a pattern industry analysts point to as a signature of his box office appeal. With “The Odyssey” continuing to perform well into its third week of release, according to early tracking, the film appears positioned to remain among the year’s top global earners well into the fall. The film also became the fastest of Nolan’s movies to reach the $650 million mark, doing so in a fraction of the time it took earlier hits such as “Oppenheimer” to reach similar milestones.
