French DJ Kavinsky found dead in Paris at 50

By Sazzad HossainAugust 4, 20262 Mins Read

French DJ and producer Kavinsky, best known for the 2011 synth-pop hit “Nightcall,” was found dead at his home in Paris this week. He was 50.

Police said a concerned neighbor alerted emergency services on Tuesday evening after failing to reach the musician, born Vincent Belorgey, for several days. Officers who responded to the address found no signs of forced entry or violence. The Paris prosecutors’ office has opened an investigation into the cause of death, describing it as standard procedure for an unexplained death and stating that first responders found “no suspicious elements” at the scene.

French media reports cited by the BBC and The Guardian said investigators are examining whether Belorgey may have suffered a stroke, noting that he had reportedly complained of headaches in the days before his death. Officials have not confirmed an official cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Kavinsy built his career through the 2000s French electropop scene, releasing tracks that blended synthesizer-driven instrumentals with a self-styled “vampire” persona inspired by 1980s film soundtracks. His biggest commercial success came with “Nightcall,” a collaboration with singer Lovefoxxx of the band CSS, which appeared on the soundtrack of the 2011 film “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling. The song introduced Kavinsky to a global audience well beyond dance music circles and has since been used in television shows, advertisements and other films.

He went on to perform at major music festivals across Europe and North America and released his debut studio album, “OutRun,” in 2013. His most recent notable public appearance came at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he performed alongside other French electronic acts in front of a global television audience.

Tributes poured in from musicians and producers across the electronic music world following news of his death, with many crediting “Nightcall” as a defining track of the decade. No funeral arrangements had been announced as of Tuesday evening, and representatives for his family had not issued a public statement beyond confirming his death to French authorities.
