GitHub Copilot Desktop App Now Available in Technical Preview

By Soniya ChowdhuryJuly 23, 20263 Mins Read

Microsoft released the GitHub Copilot desktop app in technical preview, offering developers a centralized dashboard for managing AI agents and interacting with GitHub. The app is available now for Windows 11, Windows 11 on Arm, Mac, and Linux, but requires a GitHub Copilot subscription to use.

The desktop application signals Microsoft’s shift toward agent-based workflows. Instead of chat interfaces within code editors, developers can launch and supervise autonomous AI agents that handle tasks end-to-end. A waitlist is open for Copilot Free users who want to try the app when it reaches general availability.

Central Hub for AI Agents

The Copilot desktop app serves as a command center where developers can spawn agents, monitor progress, and review outputs before merging changes. Agents can read repository context, run code, execute tests, and commit to branches—all without constant human intervention. The interface prioritizes transparency so developers understand what their agents are doing at each step.

Integration with GitHub is seamless. Developers authenticate once and the app pulls repositories, issues, and pull requests into a unified view. Agents can open PRs, leave comments, and update issue status based on code changes.

Broader Copilot Consolidation

Microsoft told its Copilot team in July that the product must “earn the right to exist,” signaling internal pressure to prove business value. The company plans to merge all consumer and enterprise Copilot apps into one unified product by August. Some underperforming features will be cut to focus resources on high-adoption areas.

GitHub Copilot itself faces rising competition from Cursor and Claude Code, which have captured significant developer loyalty over the past year. GitHub Copilot has 4.7 million paid subscribers but growth has slowed as developers explore alternatives that integrate more deeply into their workflows.

Paid Agent Tier Coming Soon

Microsoft plans to introduce a new paid tier for background AI agents—autonomous processes that run when developers aren’t at their keyboards. These agents could handle code review, security scanning, or dependency updates while developers focus on core work. Pricing details remain unannounced.

Copilot’s shift from chat to agents reflects where software development is heading. The real win isn’t faster typing—it’s delegating routine tasks to AI while keeping humans in control.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

Do I need a GitHub Copilot subscription to try the desktop app?

Yes, currently only Copilot subscribers can use the desktop app. Free access is planned for the future.
