Sonos introduced Sonos 27 on September 1 as the name for the operating system behind its connected speakers. The company also announced four new experiences for the fall, covering portable surround sound, headphone linking, voice control and control through artificial-intelligence chat tools.
The first feature is portable surrounds. Sonos says two compatible portable speakers can work as wireless rear speakers for a movie session and then return to their normal locations. Its examples include two Move 2 speakers or two Sonos Play speakers paired with a compatible soundbar such as Arc Ultra.
The second feature is personal listening through headphone linking. Sonos says the Early Access function can move audio between Ace Ultra headphones and a compatible speaker or speaker group on the same Wi-Fi network. The Sonos app can also be used to choose and control music while the headphones remain on the home network.
Sonos 27voice is the third announced experience. The company says users will be able to ask for music in ordinary language rather than remember a fixed command. Sonos Voice Control remains the default at launch, while the new voice system is scheduled for Early Access later in the fall.
The initial voice rollout has a narrow scope. Sonos says Sonos 27voice will begin in English and in the United States. It is described as opt-in and designed with privacy in mind, while the company says features can change during early access.
The fourth experience is Sonos MCP. The company describes it as a way for large language models to connect with and control a Sonos system after the user authorizes the connection. Sonos says the service will first be available to U.S.-English users, with a wider rollout to follow.
Sonos Fabric is the system capability that coordinates products. The company says it helps speakers find one another, understand their role and work together for stereo pairs, grouped rooms and home theater surround sound.
The Sonos 27 announcement is tied to software, but not every feature applies to every product. Sonos lists compatible speakers, Wi-Fi and app setup for specific functions, and says Early Access features are optional and subject to change.
9to5Mac reported the four features alongside Sonos’ new Ace Ultra headphones and Beam Ultra soundbar. The independent report also described Sonos 27 as a named software platform rather than a separate hardware product.
For Sonos owners, the useful distinction is between the system name and the individual feature schedule. Sonos says the platform is rolling out through the app, while personal listening, voice control and AI connections have their own compatibility and access limits.
