Google is completing the mobile Assistant handoff to Gemini

By Yusuf ChowdurySeptember 6, 20263 Mins Read

Google’s mobile voice-assistant transition has reached its final stage, with Gemini replacing Google Assistant on phones and tablets. A Google Assistant Community announcement says the change began on September 3 and that Gemini is becoming the mobile assistant experience. Tom’s Guide reported the same planned change after users received Google’s notice.

Gemini

The switch affects mobile devices, not every product that has carried the Assistant name. Google’s notice says Google Assistant will continue in cars with Google built-in beyond the mobile change. The distinction matters for people who use the same voice command across a phone, a vehicle and other connected products.

Gemini is designed to handle conversations and more open-ended requests. Google has been moving functions from Assistant into Gemini while adding support for actions such as playing music, setting timers and working from the lock screen. The company’s transition material presents Gemini as the next mobile assistant, not as an optional second voice app.

The change may look simple to a user. A familiar voice prompt can now open a different application and response system. The practical result depends on the phone’s Android version, installed Google apps, language, account settings and whether a requested action is supported in that market.

Google says the removal will roll out gradually. That means two people may see different behavior for a short period. Some devices may show Gemini immediately, while others may keep an older Assistant entry point until Google finishes the account and device rollout.

There is also a privacy difference worth understanding. Voice requests can involve location, contacts, calendar details, messages and other personal data. Users should review Gemini activity, permissions and account controls before relying on it for sensitive tasks. Google’s public help information explains the product change, but individual settings still decide what the app can access.

The transition is an important software change because it alters a basic way people control a phone. It can also affect routines built around long-press buttons, wake words and in-car commands. Users who need a specific Assistant function should test it in Gemini rather than assume that every old shortcut behaves the same way.

Google’s support announcement is the primary source for the mobile end date and the car exception. Tom’s Guide provides independent reporting on the rollout, while NokiaMob’s recent Android coverage shows the wider update context. The current status is a gradual handoff, not evidence that Google Assistant has disappeared from every device worldwide at one moment.
