Google has delayed the launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro to July 17, scrapping the existing Gemini 2.5 Pro architecture in favor of a complete ground-up redesign. The overhaul targets improvements in mathematical reasoning, SVG scene generation, and image quality to compete directly with OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 and Anthropic’s Fable 5 in the race for advanced AI capability.

The Strategic Pivot
Google’s decision to abandon its existing architecture signals confidence in the new direction but also acknowledges that the previous path had limitations. Competition in large language models has intensified. OpenAI and Anthropic have demonstrated significant advances. Google is taking the time to ensure Gemini 3.5 Pro can match or exceed what rivals have built.
The full redesign suggests Google identified fundamental gaps in how the previous model handled complex reasoning and visual tasks. Rather than iterating incrementally, the company decided a fresh start would yield better long-term results.
Growing Reach
Despite the delay, Gemini continues to expand. The platform crossed 900 million monthly active users across 230 countries and more than 70 languages. Google has pushed Gemini toward more proactive behavior through new features like Daily Brief, a personalized morning digest, and Gemini Spark, a 24/7 agent that works in the background under user direction.
Google Workspace enhancements now support Gemini in 28 additional languages for Google Sheets, allowing users to build and edit spreadsheets with natural language prompts.
The Competitive Landscape
The AI race has accelerated. Every major player—Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, xAI—is releasing new models and capabilities faster than ever. A two-day delay on Gemini 3.5 Pro is minor in the scheme of things. What matters is whether the redesigned model delivers on Google’s promise of superior reasoning and visual understanding when it launches Thursday.
July 17 will tell whether Google’s decision to rebuild from scratch pays off in a market where days matter and capabilities define competitive position.
