An unfolding health emergency aboard a cruise vessel in the Atlantic Ocean has left three people dead and several others ill, prompting a coordinated response from international and national health authorities.

The World Health Organization confirmed that at least one case of hantavirus infection has been identified on the ship, while investigations continue into the wider outbreak. South Africaâs Department of Health said one patient remains in intensive care in Johannesburg, and efforts are underway to medically evacuate two additional symptomatic individuals still onboard.
The vessel, operated by a Dutch company, is currently positioned off the coast of Cape Verde. Local authorities have boarded the ship to assess the situation but have not permitted passengers or crew to disembark. The company indicated that the two critically ill individuals still on the vessel are crew members requiring urgent care.
The outbreak traces back to a weeks-long voyage that began in Argentina and included stops in Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and several remote Atlantic islands. Around 150 passengers were onboard, along with a crew complement typically numbering about 70.
The first fatality, a 70-year-old man, died while the ship was at sea. His body was later removed at Saint Helena. His wife, attempting to return home to the Netherlands, collapsed at an airport in South Africa and died shortly after being taken to hospital. A third death has also been reported, with the body remaining on the ship as authorities determine next steps.
Health officials say the patient now in intensive care is a British national who fell ill near Ascension Island and was transferred to South Africa for treatment.
Hantaviruses are typically spread through contact with infected rodents, particularly via their urine or feces. Though infections are rare, they can lead to severe illnesses affecting the lungs or kidneys. Authorities note that while human-to-human transmission is uncommon, it is possible in certain circumstances.
The World Health Organization said it is working with national authorities and the cruise operator to carry out laboratory testing, epidemiological tracking, and a broader risk assessment. Contact tracing has also begun in South Africa to identify any potential exposure linked to passengers who disembarked earlier.
For now, those still aboard the vessel remain under observation as health officials weigh containment measures against the need for urgent medical care.
